The benefits of a monthly round-up

It’s long been my practice to regularly record what I am up to, and I update my personal archive with links to talks and podcasts and resources that I have contributed to or published elsewhere. I find it useful to have a list that covers most of what I do for reflection, the annual appraisal process and professional development. It’s also a great short-cut for compiling my monthly newsletter, which in itself provides an opportunity…

#LTHEchat 254: Hybrid working: new frontiers in professional practice. Led by @MarenDeepwell

Image of a team leader doing a team review with his team virtually. (Source: iStock) I am really looking forward to returning as a guest to the wonderful #LTHEchat for a conversation all about hybrid working. I’m curious to hear different perspectives and see where this conversation leads us. Below is a re-post of the original post on the #LTHEchat site: For #LTHEChat 254 we are going to shift our focus from learning to work.…

Fresh podcast listens: Brené Brown

I’ve recently embarked on a small podcast adventure, with the aim to explore at least 10 new shows this month. I’m curious to learn more about podcasting, and broaden my horizons, and I am also keen to expand the types of podcasts I am listening to, all the while looking out for ideas and resources that I could use or share with colleagues and clients. It’s been fun so far, to listen to something completely…

Taking a break was worth it.

Today is my first day back at work since 22nd December, and in between I had a complete break. It took quite some doing, but I actually managed to step back from all responsibilities in that period, including those outside my role as CEO, those related to family and friends, volunteering, CPD, goals I set myself and so forth. Prior to the end of December, I had over-extended my energy. Usually, I am very good…

2022: My year in 10 milestones

It’s Winter Solstice today and over the past few years this has become the date on which I write my review of the year. For me, these reflections are a helpful way to wind down from work and move to focus on things away from screens, to get outdoors, walk the dogs and enjoy the luxury of not having a schedule. Posey, who is asleep in her basket next to me, has been my work…

Deckchair days

Since the summer I have a deckchair in my office. And I love it. It’s a space saving and relatively cheap piece of furniture that offers an alternative place to sit, relax and read. It’s strange that I never thought of having one before. Once I put it up in my office, I was immediately convinced. Of course, not everyone has a home office and not everyone has the space for an additional piece of…

Out now! Leading Virtual Teams

Today is an exciting day for me, as my book goes out into the world. It’s my first experience of this kind of publication, and feels quite different from anything I have published before. As an Open Access publication, the book is immediately and freely available to download and read online and I am really looking forward to celebrating the launch of the book this evening in conversation with ALT’s Chair, Professor Helen O’Sullivan. Thanks…

Book launch week unpacked

I am really, really happy that this week my book is finally going to be published. The digital edition has been ready for a while and the first proof of the print version arrived this week, so it’s starting to feel real. Yesterday I added the ISBN to the cover design and ‘BOOM!’ – it felt like a proper book. Publishing a book feels scary. It took me nearly two years to write, although I…

Monthly News, October 2022

Welcome to my first autumn news of the year. At the start of the new academic year, I am preparing for the launch of Leading Virtual Teams, which is due to be published next month. After 18 months of sharing my work on the book as a work in progress, I am really excited to share the final Open Access publication with you all. The digital version will be free to read and download and also…
